On February 27, 2017, a new chapter began at the Gary Sinise Foundation with Mac Sinise joining the team as Assistant Manager of Education & Outreach. For Gary Sinise, it was more than just welcoming a colleague; it was embracing his son into the heart of a mission he deeply cherished. Mac’s role was multifaceted, from managing the Foundation’s archives to organizing events and connecting with the very people they served: military service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. His vibrant personality and dedication were infectious, inspiring countless individuals through the Gary Sinise: A Call-to-Action exhibit and in every interaction he had. As his father, Gary witnessed with immense pride Mac’s growth and commitment to the Foundation’s noble cause.
The opportunity for Mac to join Gary on the road further solidified their bond and Mac’s passion for the mission. Whether it was at Soaring Valor events honoring WWII heroes or Invincible Spirit Festivals uplifting wounded warriors with the Lt. Dan Band, Mac was deeply engaged. He found profound joy in directly connecting with those the Foundation aimed to serve, embodying the spirit of gratitude and support.
Music was in Mac’s soul since childhood, mastering the drums from the age of nine. His talent was undeniable, often stepping in for Danny Gottlieb, the Lt. Dan Band’s drummer, creating unforgettable father-son moments on stage, rocking for the troops. These were times filled with shared passion and purpose, strengthening their bond through music and service.
However, the summer of 2018 brought unforeseen challenges. Moira Sinise, Gary’s wife and Mac’s mother, received a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis in June. Shortly after, in August, the family was confronted with another devastating blow: Mac was diagnosed with Chordoma, a rare cancer affecting the spine. The news was shocking, and the rarity of Chordoma – impacting only about 300 people in the U.S. annually – added to the gravity of the situation. While 70% of initial cases are curable, a significant 30% face recurrence.
Amidst this storm, Moira’s journey took a positive turn as she achieved remission after treatment, remaining cancer-free since. Mac’s battle, however, was just beginning. Following surgery in September 2018 and another procedure in February 2019, a May 2019 scan revealed the heartbreaking return and spread of Chordoma. Despite the escalating challenges, Mac’s dedication to the Gary Sinise Foundation remained unwavering, continuing to contribute until a third spine surgery in November 2019 made office visits impossible.
Even recovering at home, Mac’s spirit to contribute shone brightly as he initiated the Gary Sinise Foundation podcast. He completed two interviews, one with the Foundation’s video producer Kip Perry and another, poignantly, with his father. In January 2020, just before his fourth spine surgery, Mac conducted a deeply personal podcast interview with Gary, marking the culmination of his formal work with the Foundation. The focus shifted entirely to his health, necessitating full-time dedication to recovery and rehabilitation, including a fifth spine surgery, radiation, and ongoing chemotherapy.
Facing such a rare cancer, the Chordoma Foundation became an invaluable source of support. Recognizing their crucial role in research and the pursuit of a cure, the family established “Team Mac” in 2021. This initiative served as a channel for friends and family to offer encouragement and contribute to vital Chordoma research, highlighting the community’s collective hope and support.
A graduate of the USC Thornton School of Music, Mac’s musical journey, initially through drumming and then songwriting, faced disruption due to his disability. However, his passion for music was reignited in early 2023 when he revisited “Arctic Circles,” an unfinished college composition. Enlisting the help of Lt. Dan Band violinist Dan Myers and pianist Ben Lewis, Mac, despite physical limitations, channeled his creativity from his hospital bed, using technology to compose and refine his music. His resilience transformed his hospital room into a studio of innovation and collaboration.
Composer Oliver Schnee, an old college friend, joined Mac’s musical endeavor in June 2023. Together, they meticulously crafted the arrangement for “Arctic Circles.” Mac’s vision culminated in a recording session at the legendary Sunset Sound in Los Angeles on July 17, 2023, financed by Mac himself. With the support of seasoned professionals like Bill Schnee and top studio musicians, “Arctic Circles” came to life.
Expanding his musical horizons, Mac took up the harmonica, inspired by Medal of Honor recipient Sammy L. Davis. He learned to play “Shenandoah,” prompting the inclusion of a string arrangement for this piece as well, maximizing the studio session’s potential.
These two pieces sparked the vision for a full album, Resurrection & Revival, centered on the theme of revitalizing and bringing back to life unfinished or cherished works. Further recording sessions in Nashville in November 2023, including one on Mac’s 33rd birthday with the Lt. Dan Band, solidified this ambitious project. A particularly poignant moment was Gary joining Mac on bass for “Red River Valley,” a song from Mac’s childhood, symbolizing a beautiful blend of personal history and musical expression.
Tragically, just as his album was ready for release, Mac’s battle with cancer concluded. He passed away on January 5, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of courage, creativity, and profound love.
The loss is immeasurable, a sentiment deeply understood by anyone who has experienced the pain of losing a child or a loved one. Gary Sinise, having met countless families of fallen heroes through his Foundation, found himself facing a similar heartbreak. Yet, amidst grief, there was also immense pride and inspiration drawn from Mac’s unwavering spirit. He fought relentlessly, embodying resilience and determination until the very end.
Gary shared Mac’s story publicly in a recent interview, focusing on Mac’s music and his inspirational approach to life, even in the face of immense adversity. Mac’s dedication to his music, his collaboration with Oliver, and his sheer joy in seeing his musical vision realized were powerful testaments to his spirit.
Mac’s music videos are available on his YouTube channel, offering a glimpse into his artistic soul. His album, Mac Sinise: Resurrection and Revival, stands as a lasting tribute to his life and talent.
In his final days in the hospital, Mac found joy in sharing his music with the hospital staff, their positive responses bringing him immense happiness. Even in his last moments, surrounded by family, Mac found peace, his battle with Chordoma finally over.
Mac’s story is a poignant reminder of the universal impact of cancer and the strength of the human spirit. His life, though marked by challenges, was filled with purpose, creativity, and love. He was an inspiration to his family, friends, and all who knew his story, demonstrating grace, courage, and unwavering love.
Mac’s deep faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing strength and solace throughout his journey. His favorite quote from St. Augustine, “You have made us for yourself oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you,” reflects his spiritual grounding and his search for peace and meaning.
Mac Sinise’s legacy is one of profound impact, achieved in just 33 years. His music, Resurrection & Revival, is more than just an album; it’s a testament to his life, his vision, and his enduring spirit. It lives on, as does his memory, forever imprinted in the hearts of those who loved him.

Working alongside my brother-in-law and serving in his family’s beautiful mission has been one of the biggest blessings of my life. Mac had a passion to bridge the gap between our nation’s defenders and civilian communities, ensuring that Americans know the sacrifices our nation’s defenders and their families make to keep us safe. Mac was a man of faith, truly humble, thoughtful and caring. There are no words to describe how missed he will be, but we are forever filled with gratitude for the precious time we had with him.

Mac was a man of incredible compassion, witty humor, and endless empathy. He found his joy and purpose in our mission, in honoring our nation’s heroes and their families. Even when he could no longer physically make it to the office, he was always trying to find a way to “do a little more.” I know he continues to serve alongside us, just beyond the veil. I will miss him and our deep conversations about everything till the end of my days. Heaven welcomed one of our very best.

We met Mac when he was 11 years old at Epcot in Walt Disney World, when his Dad was narrating the Candlelight Christmas show we perform in. We bonded right away through our passion for percussion. It was a thrill to watch him grow as a musician and person and we supported him as the substitute drummer for the Lt. Dan Band, a task that he fully embraced. We so admired his positive, inspiring spirit even through the devastating illness. We love you Mac and your spirit will live with us forever.

Mac was extraordinarily kind and introspective, always deeply pondering something. I rarely had a conversation with him that didn’t wander down several paths that encouraged me to take pause, explore a thought, or reflect upon an idea. He thrived doing the work of the Foundation and fueled our mission with new ideas to ensure we were always creating and trying new things. I am incredibly grateful for the time I was able to spend with Mac over the years and was honored to be able to call him a friend. To know Mac was to know one of the best people life has to offer.
