(In hindsight, I wouldn’t recommend this route – manufactured screens offer superior quality, and aluminum frames are a much better choice for their durability and lighter weight compared to wood which tends to warp.) The industry standard is definitely moving towards robust and lightweight aluminum frames for good reason.

- Opt for High DPI Screens: Investing in screens with higher DPI (dots per inch) is a game-changer. These finer screens hold detail much better, resulting in sharper and more intricate prints. The improvement in print quality is significant.
- Master the Two-Handed Squeegee Technique: Consistency is key in screen printing. Having someone assist by holding the frame steady allows you to use both hands to pull the squeegee. This ensures even pressure and ink distribution across the screen for cleaner prints.
- Heat Setting with a Household Iron: Don’t have a professional heat press? No problem! You can effectively heat-set your prints using a regular iron. Simply cover the printed design with a piece of paper and iron over it for about a minute. This will properly cure the ink and make your design durable.
- Choose Super Opaque Inks for Dark Fabrics: Printing on dark t-shirts? For vibrant and bold designs, especially when using lighter inks, look for inks specifically labeled “super opaque.” These inks are formulated to provide excellent coverage and brightness even on dark materials, ensuring your design truly pops.
