Like many college students, I was part of a band and always looking for ways to fund our projects. Ordering custom band t-shirts seemed like a great idea, but the costs were prohibitive for our student budgets. Being in art school, however, taught me the value of resourcefulness and DIY solutions. That’s when I discovered screen printing as a budget-friendly method to produce merchandise ourselves.
Screen printing became my go-to skill for creating branded items and unique, personalized pieces without breaking the bank. While there’s a small initial investment to get started, the return on investment grows significantly as you produce more items. In my early days, I even attempted to build my own screens using wooden frames and fabric store mesh. (In retrospect, I wouldn’t recommend this DIY screen route. The fabric isn’t the same as professional screen printing mesh, and wooden frames are prone to warping. The industry standard is now aluminum frames due to their lighter weight and durability.)

Invest in High DPI Screens: Using screens with higher dots per inch (DPI) significantly improves the detail and sharpness of your prints. This upgrade alone made a noticeable difference in the quality of my designs.

Two-Handed Squeegee Technique: Having someone hold the screen frame steady allows you to use both hands to pull the squeegee. This ensures more even pressure and ink distribution across the screen, leading to cleaner and more consistent prints.

Heat Setting with an Iron: If you don’t have access to a professional heat dryer, you can effectively heat-set your prints using a household iron. Simply cover the printed design with a piece of paper and iron over it for about a minute. This will properly cure the ink and make your design wash-fast.

Super Opaque Inks for Dark Fabrics: When printing on dark-colored materials, opt for inks specifically labeled “super opaque.” These inks are formulated to provide brighter and more vibrant colors that truly stand out against dark backgrounds, ensuring your design pops.
