Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Printing at NYU Law

To help you navigate the printing system smoothly, here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

1. What should I do if something goes wrong with my print job?

If you encounter an issue or an error during the printing process, the simplest solution is to resubmit your print job to the Pharos queue and release it at a different printer location. For more complex issues or if you require immediate assistance, you can contact the Helpdesk at (212) 998-6111 for technical support.

2. Is double-sided printing available and enabled by default?

Yes, the Pharos print client is configured to set all print jobs to double-sided (duplex) printing by default. This is part of NYU Law’s sustainability efforts to reduce paper consumption. If you need single-sided prints, you can easily override this setting within your printer settings for each print job. The exact steps to disable duplex printing vary depending on your operating system and the application you are printing from. Here are a few common examples:

  • Microsoft Word: Go to Print > “Print One Sided” option in the settings.
  • Adobe Acrobat: Go to Print > Properties > Finishing > Uncheck “Print on both sides”.
  • Apple Preview: Go to Print > Show Details (Down arrow next to Printer) > Uncheck “Two-Sided”.

3. I tapped my NYUCard at a print station, but my print jobs are not listed. What could be the reason?

There are a few potential reasons why your print jobs might not appear when you tap your NYUCard:

  • Job Time Limit: Documents remain in the print queue for 24 hours. After this period, they are automatically deleted. You will need to resend the document to the print queue if it has expired.
  • NetID Mismatch: Ensure that the NetID you entered when submitting the print job matches the NetID associated with your NYUCard. If these do not match, the system will not recognize your jobs. Resend your document, making sure to use the correct NetID.
  • Printer Queue Compatibility: Remember that documents sent to the color print queue will only be visible at color printers, and black and white jobs will only appear at black and white printers. Ensure you are at the correct type of printer for the job you are trying to release.

4. The printer interface shows a balance. Am I being charged for printing?

For black and white printing on Law School printers, you will not be charged. The balance you might see typically reflects your Campus Cash account, which is used for various campus services, including color printing. Color printing at the Law School is charged at the standard NYU rate of $0.75 per page and is deducted from your Campus Cash balance, not the $50 per semester print grant provided to some NYU students in other schools. If you are printing to “NYU Print Service” at non-Law School printers, or printing black and white outside of Law School facilities, you will be charged the standard NYU rate of $0.10 per page for black and white prints.

5. Why is NYU Law using Pharos printing system?

The implementation of Pharos is a direct result of the NYU Law School’s Sustainability Committee initiatives. The committee, composed of both students and administrators, highlighted the significant environmental impact of paper and toner consumption from public printers. Pharos, already successfully utilized across other NYU departments, was adopted to reduce paper and toner waste. This system provides students with convenient and reliable printing options while promoting environmental responsibility by managing and reducing overall printing volume.

By understanding and utilizing the Pharos printing system, NYU Law students can efficiently manage their printing needs while contributing to the Law School’s sustainability goals.
