Deploying printer drivers across a large network can present significant challenges for IT administrators. Recently, our art department invested in Epson SureColor P900 printers, a popular choice succeeding models like the 3800, 3880, and P800. Traditionally, Epson offered driver packages as standard Apple Installer .pkg files, simplifying deployment via tools like Jamf. However, the driver download for the P900 model, named “SCP900_Lite_64NR2_NA.dmg,” only contains an “Epson Installer” application, lacking the deployable .pkg format IT departments rely on for streamlined software distribution.
Attempts to capture the driver installation process using Jamf Composer to create a deployable package have proven unsuccessful. Printers deployed using these captured packages fail to function, displaying errors indicating missing software and prompting users to contact the manufacturer. Initial support inquiries with Epson directed us back to their website, ironically, to download the same problematic DMG installer already causing deployment issues.
The absence of a readily available .pkg installer for the Epson Printer Program, specifically the driver for the SureColor P900, poses a considerable obstacle. While older version 11 drivers in .pkg format may exist, compatibility with current operating systems is uncertain. Manually installing drivers on over 70 systems is an impractical and resource-intensive solution. The need for a direct download link to the Epson 13.23 driver for the P900, or a method to extract a deployable package from the Epson Installer application, is critical for efficient enterprise deployment and management of this Epson printer program.
