Step-by-Step Guide: How to Change Toner in Your Brother Printer

Changing the toner in your Brother printer is a straightforward maintenance task that ensures your printer continues to produce high-quality prints. Whether you’re a home user or in a busy office, knowing how to replace your Brother printer toner is essential. This guide will walk you through each step clearly and concisely, making the process simple and safe.

Before you begin, ensure you have the correct replacement toner cartridge for your specific Brother printer model. You can usually find this information in your printer’s manual or on the Brother website. Let’s get started!

  1. Make sure your Brother printer is powered on. This is crucial for the printer to properly detect the new toner cartridge later in the process.

  2. Open the front cover of your Brother printer. Once opened, it’s important to wait for approximately 10 minutes with the machine still powered on. This allows the internal fan to cool down the extremely hot internal components, ensuring your safety during the toner replacement.

It’s important to be aware that immediately after use, some internal parts of your Brother printer can be very hot. Always allow sufficient time for the printer to cool down before reaching inside to prevent burns.

  1. Carefully remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly from the printer. Gently pull the assembly towards you to remove it from the machine.

When handling the drum unit and toner cartridge, it’s recommended to place them on a clean, flat surface covered with disposable paper or cloth. This precaution helps to catch any toner that might spill accidentally.

Handle the toner cartridge with care. Toner can stain skin and clothing. If any toner gets on your skin or clothes, wash it off immediately with cold water.

  1. Locate the green lock lever on the drum unit. Push down on this lever to release the toner cartridge. Once unlocked, you can easily pull the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

  2. Take your new Brother toner cartridge out of its packaging. Before you install it, hold the cartridge horizontally with both hands and gently shake it from side to side a few times. This action evenly distributes the toner inside the cartridge, which can help ensure optimal print quality from the first page.

  3. Remove the protective cover from the new toner cartridge. This cover is usually brightly colored and designed to protect the toner from leaking during shipping and handling. Make sure to remove it completely before installation.

  4. Insert the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit. Push it in until you hear it click into place. When the toner cartridge is correctly installed, the green lock lever will lift automatically, securing the cartridge.

  5. Find the corona wire inside the drum unit. Clean it by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and then right to left several times. This cleaning step is important for maintaining print quality and preventing streaks or lines on your printed pages.

Ensure that you return the green tab to its original home position (indicated by a ▲ mark) after cleaning. Failing to do so can result in vertical stripes appearing on your printed documents.

  1. Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the Brother printer. Slide it back into its slot until it is firmly in place. Then, close the front cover of the printer.

After you have replaced the toner cartridge, it’s important not to turn off the printer’s power or open the front cover again until the printer’s display clears the “Please Wait” message and returns to the “Ready” mode. This ensures that the printer properly registers the new toner cartridge.

By following these steps, you can easily change the toner in your Brother printer and get back to printing your important documents with no interruption. Regular maintenance, including timely toner replacement, ensures the longevity and consistent performance of your Brother printer.
