This new release combines years of athlete data with the cutting-edge capabilities of 3D printing, offering runners an unprecedented running experience.
For over four years, Adidas has been at the forefront of developing 4D lattice midsole technology in collaboration with Carbon, a leading digital manufacturing company. This partnership harnesses athlete data and Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis™ technology to create precisely tuned 3D printed midsoles. Adidas 4D footwear stands as a pioneer in utilizing this advanced technology, allowing for the fine-tuning of midsoles to cater to specific movement patterns, ensuring athletes achieve precision performance with every stride.
The Innovative 4DFWD Midsole: Engineered for Forward Motion
The centerpiece of this innovation is the new adidas 4DFWD lattice midsole. After analyzing five million potential lattice structures, Adidas identified and utilized a unique bowtie-shaped FWD CELL, crafted from 40% bio-based material. This FWD CELL is specifically engineered to compress forward upon vertical impact. Compared to previous 4D midsole generations, the adidas 4DFWD midsole demonstrably generates three times more forward motion under vertical loading, as proven in mechanical testing environments. This translates to a significant 15% reduction in peak braking force experienced by runners, as the midsole effectively redirects vertical impact forces into horizontal forward motion. Impressively, this innovative design achieves a running economy comparable to the acclaimed Ultraboost midsoles in laboratory conditions.
Rigorous Testing and Development: Validated by Science and Athletes
The adidas 4DFWD underwent extensive bio-mechanical testing at the University of Calgary, rigorously analyzing crucial aspects such as forward motion, braking force, and running economy. Beyond laboratory testing, the concept was also evaluated by Adidas runners local to the development team in Germany and a carefully selected group of high-level running creators across the USA. Further enhancing the scientific rigor, cutting-edge cognitive perception testing was conducted at Arizona State University to ensure optimal runner experience.
4D technology unlocks design possibilities that traditional foam midsoles simply cannot achieve. Building upon the foundation of our first-generation 4D lattice midsole, we challenged ourselves to elevate performance to the next level. By coding millions of potential lattice structures, we aimed to specifically design a midsole that counteracts the negative mechanical forces runners experience. Through close collaboration with Carbon, our product teams, and dedicated testers, we discovered the perfect lattice midsole. It’s engineered to compress forwards under load, effectively countering mechanical forces while providing runners with a unique and smooth gliding sensation.

Release and Availability: Join the 4DFWD Revolution
The adidas 4DFWD will be launched in three distinct colorways, including a special Tokyo Collection edition, designated as the primary podium shoe for Adidas athletes in Tokyo. The initial release will feature a striking black and fluorescent orange colorway, available exclusively to Creators Club members starting May 15th. The highly anticipated Tokyo Collection colorway will follow on July 1st, with a global release scheduled for August 12th.
