The impact of Milner Library’s 3D printing capabilities is vividly illustrated through the experience of Rachael DiSciullo, a doctoral student in the School of Biological Sciences. Her dissertation research on house wren mating habits required realistic bird models. Taxidermy specimens proved inadequate due to wear and tear and concerns about pseudoreplication in her study. Seeking a solution, DiSciullo turned to Milner Library’s 3D printing service and successfully obtained five custom-printed wren models.
“The wrens can be rather aggressive,” DiSciullo noted, highlighting the limitations of traditional models. The 3D-printed wrens provided a consistent and ethical alternative, perfectly suited for her behavioral studies. This project exemplifies how the “Milner printer,” as students affectionately call the 3D printing service, directly supports advanced academic research at Illinois State.
Milner Library’s foray into 3D printing began in 2018, and since then, the service has witnessed exponential growth. Overseen by Paul Unsbee, Director of IT Services, and Steve Koehler, Digital Media Specialist, the service has completed over 1,600 projects. To meet surging demand, Milner Library has expanded its facilities to include four 3D printers, solidifying its position as a vital campus resource.
Unlike many universities that require users to operate 3D printers themselves, Milner Library offers a full-service experience. Library staff manages the printing process from start to finish, making the technology accessible to everyone, regardless of their technical expertise. This commitment to user-friendliness has been key to the service’s widespread adoption across diverse disciplines.
Steve Koehler, with his background in Creative Technologies, is the driving force behind the “Milner printer” service. He expertly handles print requests, optimizes printing parameters, and manages the intricate post-printing process, including removing support structures. Student worker Jay Yonan assists in managing the workflow, ensuring efficient service delivery.
The range of projects undertaken by Milner Library’s 3D printing service is remarkably diverse. From whimsical Boba Fett figurines and music note dice to sophisticated microscope adapters and miniature cockroach treadmills for research, the “Milner printer” caters to a wide spectrum of needs. Students and faculty are leveraging this technology for creative expression, practical problem-solving, and advanced research endeavors.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Milner Library’s 3D printing service demonstrated its critical community value. Collaborating with other campus units, the library spearheaded an initiative to produce 900 face shields for the McLean County Emergency Management Agency. This rapid response effort highlighted the “Milner printer’s” capacity to address urgent needs and contribute to public safety.

Illinois State University Redbirds can submit requests through the library website, utilizing readily available 3D model repositories like Thingiverse, or submitting their own designs. While high demand leads to a typical turnaround of one to two weeks, the free service and expert support make it well worth the wait.
Building on the success of the house wren project and recognizing the growing need for custom model creation, Milner Library acquired a 3D scanner. This new addition allows users to scan physical objects and create digital 3D models, further expanding the possibilities of the “Milner printer” service and solidifying Milner Library as a hub for innovation and creation on the Illinois State University campus.
