Back in my college days, playing in bands was a blast, but our wallets were perpetually thin, typical of broke college musicians. Ordering custom band t-shirts to sell at gigs? Way out of our budget. Luckily, being surrounded by art students meant I learned a thing or two about resourceful DIY solutions.
Screen printing became my go-to skill for creating merchandise without breaking the bank. Like any craft, there’s an initial small investment, but the more you print, the more cost-effective it becomes. I even started with homemade screens using wooden frames and fabric store mesh. (Honestly, don’t do this. Fabric store mesh isn’t the same as proper screen printing mesh, and wooden frames warp. Aluminum frames are the industry standard now – lighter and more rigid.)
Screen printing is an awesome and budget-friendly way to produce branded items or unique custom pieces. Want to surprise a friend with a funny, personalized t-shirt? DIY screen printing is the cheapest route! Even kids can quickly grasp the basics and participate in the whole printing process – it’s a fantastic activity!
Building on my experience, here are some crucial tips I’ve learned beyond the basics that will significantly improve your Screen Print Shirts:
- Invest in High DPI Screens: Finer mesh screens capture greater detail, drastically enhancing the quality of your prints.
- Get a Helping Hand for Squeegeeing: Having someone hold your frame steady allows you to use both hands for even squeegee pressure, resulting in cleaner prints.
- Iron for Heat Setting (Dryer Alternative): No heat dryer? No problem! Cover your print with paper and iron it for about a minute to effectively heat set the ink.
- Choose “Super Opaque” Ink for Dark Fabrics: For vibrant prints on dark shirts, opt for inks specifically labeled “super opaque” to ensure colors pop.
