How does the print allotment work?
Each semester, fee-paying students without account flags receive a printing allotment through the ITS Print Plan. This allotment is automatically added to your One Card and can be used at all supported Carolina Print Hub locations. The standard allotments are:
- Fall: 400 pages
- Spring: 400 pages
- Summer Session I (SSI): 175 pages
- Summer Session II (SSII): 175 pages
- Maymester: 175 pages
Your print allocation is refreshed at the start of each semester.
What is Pharos and the Carolina Print Hub printing client?
Pharos, branded as the Carolina Print Hub printing client, is the software used to manage and track your print plan funds. This system helps UNC manage printing efficiently by reducing costs, promoting responsible printing, and enhancing print security.
What are the printing costs after the allotment is used?
The print allocation is designed to cover the printing needs of most students. Approximately only 5% of students exceed their free allotment. For printing beyond the allotment, black and white prints are $0.10 per page, and color prints are $0.30 per page.
Is Carolina Print Hub funded by student fees?
Yes, Carolina Print Hub is part of the services funded by student fees through ITS (Information Technology Services). Unused print allotments contribute to reducing costs for other essential student services such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft software, Virtual Lab access, campus WiFi, classroom technology, and ITS Service Desk support. This shared funding model ensures a broad range of technological resources are available to students.
Why a print allocation?
ITS, in partnership with Student Government, established the print allocation to meet the printing needs of the majority of students while managing resources effectively. Currently, only about 3% of students need to pay for additional printing, indicating the allocation is well-suited for most users. The allocation system is designed to accommodate varying printing needs across the student population, from those who print infrequently to those with higher demands.
Where are the color printers located?
There are five designated color printers available across campus at:
- Undergraduate Library (UL)
- Davis Library
- Health Sciences Library
- Sloane Art Library (102 Hanes Art Center)
- Kenan-Flagler Business School
Color printing is automatically set to double-sided and costs $0.30 per page. To use color printers, upload your print jobs via mobileprint.unc.edu and release them at a color printer location. Alternatively, you can install the Carolina Print Hub color print queue from shareware.unc.edu to print directly from your laptop. Note that you need to install both the Color and Black & White queues if you intend to use both types of printers, and select the correct queue when printing.
When is the print allotment available?
The print allotment is active from the first day of each semester until the end of final exams, as per the University Registrar’s Calendar.
What happens when the print allotment runs out?
Once your print allotment balance reaches $0.00, printing charges will be automatically deducted from your OneCard funds. You can easily add value to your OneCard online.
